Microneedling: Benefits, side effects & after-care

Microneedling has slowly become one of the most popular cosmetic procedures that we are seeing online. The pursuit of perfect skin is endless and microneedling is at the forefront of moderately invasive cosmetic procedures.

The process of microneedling involves the puncturing of the skin all over the face and neck with tiny needles to promote collagen production and rejuvenate the skin. Also referred to as Collagen Induction Therapy, the process is designed to diminish the appearance of wrinkles, acne scars, large pores and even stretch marks.

Estheticians use a tool called a dermapen that works by using tiny needles of various sizes to cause small pin-pricks in the first layer of skin. The tiny wounds trigger your skin to respond by making new collagen-rich tissues. As the new skin tissue heals it leaves a more even tone and texture, creating the appearance of softer, smoother skin.

Although some results can be immediate, dermatologists recommend multiple microneedling sessions, depending on your skin, to obtain maximum results. Long term results will appear about 4 weeks after each session.

Is microneedling right for you?

Microneedling is most commonly used on the face to target: Fine lines & wrinkles, acne scars, sun spots, uneven skin tone and reduced elasticity. Microneedling is sometimes used to treat stretch marks on the thighs and abdominal area.

Microneedling is not recommended for those who are pregnant, have certain skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis, a history of skin scars or have had recent radiation therapy.

Ideal candidates are people with some scars caused by acne or injuries that are visible on the skin; people with fine lines, moderate wrinkles and uneven skin texture; and/or for people with moderate skin looseness and diminished texture and tone.

Does it hurt?

Microneedling can be a very painful procedure, which is why most technicians will apply a topical numbing cream to ensure clients experience as little discomfort as possible during the process. Before the procedure, your dermatologist will apply the numbing cream all over your face. Zensa Topical Anaesthetic contains 5% lidocaine, the highest percentage available without a prescription. That means the cream will penetrate deep into the layers of your skin, allowing for the microneedling procedure to be virtually pain-free. Zensa Numbing Cream is the most natural topical anaesthetic on the market, made from just 7 ingredients, including Vitamin E. Vitamin E contains anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce redness and speed up healing.

How long does the procedure take?

Before getting started, your dermatologist will clean your skin and apply the topical numbing cream. The numbing cream will stay on for 30-45 minutes depending on the area. Once your skin is numb, your dermatologist will then run the tiny needles evenly all over your face. This process generally takes about 30 minutes for the face. After the procedure, your dermatologist may apply a calming serum to your skin. Overall, the entire procedure can take up to 2 hours.

Dermatologists recommend a minimum of 3-4 sessions to see substantial results. This, in combination with the right skin care routine will help to enhance your results.

What are the side effects?

The most common side effect from microneedling is mild bleeding during the procedure, which should cease before the procedure is over. Other side effects include skin irritation and redness directly after the procedure. In some cases skin will appear bruised but this will subside after a few days.

How much does it cost?

Microneedling can cost anywhere from $100-$700 per session, with facial treatments sitting in the middle of that range at $300 per session. The cost can depend on a variety of factors, including the clinic you choose, and the size and location of your treatment area.

It is important to avoid using any skin care products directly after your procedure. Clean your face using a gentle cleanser for the first 72 hours after your procedure. After three days you may re-adopt your normal skin care routine. Although, your skin may feel more dry than usual. We recommend adding Zensa Healing Cream to your routine to help moisturize your skin following the microneedling treatment. Zensa Healing Cream was designed to help boost the skin’s ability to heal quickly, making it an ideal after-care solution for painful dermal procedures. Using natural ingredients like vitamin E oil and calendula oil that contain anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties helps speed up the healing process of your skin.

Try to avoid make-up for at least 24 to 72 hours after the procedure. Ensure to always use sunscreen to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, as your skin is more sensitive in the days after microneedling.
